GIRLS LEADING OUR WORLD

G.L.O.W is a Durhams Hope For Kids initiative targeted towards girls 13 - 18 in Durham. At G.L.O.W, we are committed to creating a safe and inclusive space where all girls can thrive and have sisterhood regardless of their socioeconomic background or circumstances. We take a holistic approach to our program, focusing on various aspects of their development. G.L.O.W focuses on Personal and professional development, social awareness, academic improvement, physical and emotional wellbeing, and financial literacy.Through our evidence-based curriculum, curated trips and activities, community service projects, community resources, and mentorship, we support the overall growth and empowerment of our participants.

In addition to academic support, we prioritize mental health and well-being. We collaborate with certified youth life coaches and mental health specialists who provide guidance and support to our girls, ensuring they have the tools to navigate challenges and build resilience. We also facilitate discussions on social awareness issues, inviting community leaders, community activists, and individuals who have personal experiences in these areas. By fostering these conversations, we encourage empathy, understanding, and knowledge of self.

GLOW Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Curriculum

Our research-based curriculum is designed for students, ages 13-18 years old, and covers relatable topics that help youth navigate the trials and celebrate the accomplishments of their middle & high school years. Through this program, participants will uncover their natural resilience, gain a better understanding of themselves and others, develop vital social and emotional skills, access their creative intelligence and cultivate their personal potential.

Embracing five pillars of SEL that include:

Self-Awareness
Self – Management
Social Awareness
Relationship Skills
Responsible Decision-making

Our program focuses on mentoring, life skills, social awareness, personal development, and community engagement. We recruit mentors to conduct virtual mentoring sessions based on our weekly curriculum topic.

GLOW Circles, workshops, field trips, outings and events complete the Girls Leading Our World service delivery model.

Program effectiveness consists of tracking impact by assessing academics, behavior, graduation rates, and participation.

The GLOW Program is designed to:

Increase Mental Wellbeing and understanding of how the mind works
Increase Impulse Control
Increase Communication, decision making and problem-solving skills
Increase resilience (bounce back) from tough circumstances.
Increase resilience (compassion for others) during tough circumstances

PROMOTING LEADERSHIP

We will develop leadership skills among GLOW girls through workshops, mentorship programs, and opportunities for them to take on leadership roles in their communities.

BUILDING SELF-CONFIDENCE

We will offer self-esteem workshops, counseling services, and personal development programs to help girls overcome obstacles and develop a strong sense of self-worth.

ENCOURAGING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

We will offer career guidance, entrepreneurship cohorts for our girls to participate in, and internship opportunities, enabling GLOW girls to explore various professions and pursue their dreams.

CREATING SAFE SPACES

We will establish safe environments and support networks where GLOW girls can share their experiences, seek guidance, and find solace in a community that uplifts and supports them.
